We had a marching band rehearsal after school today. It was the usual schtick, except that the band was having it's picture taken, which in turn required them to wear their uniforms. This presented its own unique challenges because teenagers insist on turning simple tasks into epic undertakings. Being around these kids usually makes me feel good about myself, since I'm a genius in comparison.
I was studying some scores up in the bleachers during a rehearsal break when one of the tenor players came over and sat down next to me. She's a sophomore, and despite not being the brightest star in the galaxy of high school musicians, she's really nice and enthusiastic about band. So she's essentially the perfect student: dumb and eager, just like a puppy. I asked her what was up, to which her reply was:
"Well, I saw you sitting up here all alone, and it was sad. I just don't want you to be lonely."
There you have it, folks... a 15 year old girl decided to talk to me out of pity. I showed her the scores and told her what I was working on, which seemed to satisfy her that I wasn't just a pathetic loner (which, come to think of it, I am). But the break ended and we went back to rehearsal.
Seriously, high school kids are hysterical.
